Not eating all I can at Fuji
So I managed to talk A into going with me to the new sushi place that opened in Guelph (across from the train station) called Fuji. I grabbed the take out menu when we were walking by last weekend and had been planning my visit since. We ventured out on a snowy Tuesday night around 7:30 and the place was somewhat busy, but not as packed as I've seen it. The decor is nice enough and they definitely have lots of seating. We thought we would order off the menu instead of all-you-can-eat since I can't eat much anyway but we were not offered any menus when we arrived. Instead, there was a list of items that you check off, hand your paper to one of the waitresses that just walk around and around waiting for a task, and wait about 5 seconds for them to come back with your food. It is actually suspiciously fast.
We were a little apprehensive about what to order since a few of the items we wanted (dynamite maki and tuna sushi) were not on the list so we started out with a black dragon roll (no description provided), a rainbow roll, miso soup, 2 pc. salmon sushi, 2 pc. white tuna sushi, and a salmon hand roll. I drank my soup, ate the sushi and hand roll and decided I was full (really great approach when all you can eat is $18.99 and you get charged for anything you don't eat (apparently - ed.)). A soldiered on and finished the rolls. When I calculated in my head how much money they would be making off of me, I found a spot in my stomach where I could shove more food and decided to get spring rolls and dumpling noodle soup while A ordered a crispy spicy roll. The spring rolls tasted surprisingly similar to the frozen spring rolls we get from Ultra and the dumpling noodle soup was limp and bland. I finished the meal with some vanilla ice cream just to prove to myself that I had eaten enough and paid the man my money.
Verdict after the jump.
I would not recommend Fuji. The table beside us had a couple of guys that ordered tons of food every time the waitress walked by. They are the type of people that Fuji serves best. Students that don't have a lot of money, can pack away the food, and don't care what it tastes like. It wasn't horrible, don't get me wrong. E, A, and I tried a horrible sushi place on Victoria, but Fuji is just really not that good. I wondered whether they have "cheap" items for all you can eat and leave the better food for those that order directly off the menu. All in all though, I will be going to Sushi Choice next time where I know I can get much better food at the same price I paid for all you can eat at Fuji.
Interestingly, before I went I read a review in Echo because Fuji is not listed on Restaurantica yet. I completely disagree with the Echo reviewer (obviously), wonder whether she has ever been to Sushi Choice, and further wonder whether the owner knew she was there and gave her the "good stuff".
It's funny how unappetizing lesser quality sushi is. There aren't too many foods that I can think of that have the same effect.
Nice review S. That saves me from trying it out with Steve in a couple of weeks. We'll stick with Sushi Choice.
