Which Super Power?
2008 October 16
Ok, so the new poll asks: If you could choose only one superpower, and you are the only person in the world who can have it, which would you choose: Flight or Invisibility?
The rules:
- Flight includes the ability to fly at 1000 mph and anywhere within the earth's atmosphere. You can carry only what you can carry now.
- Invisibility includes any clothing you are wearing, but not what you pick up. You are no more stealthy (quiet) that you are right now.
Please answer in the poll on the right, and leave your reasoning in the comments to this post. I'll discuss the results in a later post.
I've had many good dreams about being able to fly, but never a dream about invisibility. Flying seems to provide the ability to travel all over the world, something I've always wanted to do anyway. With invisibility, you end up being sneaky, going places you shouldn't be (or you wouldn't need to be invisible), and dropping in on people's conversations (which you probably wouldn't want to hear). Invisibility would just make me feel guilty, but flight would be fun. Just stay out of American airspace.
Much of the same reasons as Sarah, for me. Traveling, in almost every instance, is a means to an end. I want to see a place or be at a place and traveling just delays it. If you're traveling (slowly and by not flying) for its own sake, well, then you can still do it. It would make things instantly accessible, so if you forgot your wallet, or needed to pick something up from somewhere, the irritation or delay would be negligible. You would save a lot of cash on shipping costs from eBay purchases. Chicks would probably be super impressed, too. It still allows for evildoing, if you're so inclined. You could throw a football and then catch it on the other side of the field, like Mr. Perfect. Maybe this should have been point-form.
why not both? I want to fly invisibly.
Incidentally, I read a kids book once that argued that if you were invisible you would also be blind because you see because of light reflecting off your retina so if the light beams passed through you then you couldn't see. That would just about not make it worthwhile to be invisible.
What I would really like for a super power is telekinesis (sp?).
also a tail like a monkey for swinging in trees and undoing tight jar lids.
ps - I like your little "updated today" banner. Have you always had that?
"I just wanna fly" - Sugar Ray
Flying - useful, fun and just plain cool
Invisible - When was the last time you heard somebody say "Hey cool, look at the invisible guy".
Flight. Invisibility is tempting, but ultimately so much more potential for negative uses than positive. And even if you were inclined to use your powers for evil, the flight power is high-octane, whereas the invisibility has been nerfed by not being able to mask things you pick up... so invisibility loses even if you take morality out of the calculation.
If I could fly, then I wouldn't ever have to ride the bus again. end of story.
I opted for Invisibility, though a good part of that was my want to bolster the flagging Invisible vote.
Flying would be neat, but since it stands out so much, I could see it being noticed too easily by the general public or insidious governments. What good is a super-power if you can't really use it? Invisibility trumps being noticed rather well, if one can master the art of being quiet.
Then again, rationally thinking about something irrational like super-powers is a little odd too.
I need sleep badly...
